Metal-Free Crowns and Bridges

Biocompatible ceramic restorations that are both beautiful and kind to your body.

Why metal-free restorations?

At ndu Clinic, we believe that every material placed in your mouth should be biocompatible and free from metals. Traditional dental crowns and bridges often contain metal alloys (including nickel, cobalt, and chromium) beneath a layer of porcelain. Over time, these metals can corrode, potentially releasing ions into surrounding tissue and creating galvanic currents between different metals in the mouth.

Ceramic restorations eliminate these concerns. They are made entirely from tooth-coloured materials that are well-tolerated by the body and look indistinguishable from natural teeth.

What materials do we use?

  • Zirconia: extremely strong and durable, ideal for posterior (back) teeth where biting forces are greatest. Its white colour means no grey shadowing at the gum line.
  • Lithium disilicate (e.max): offers exceptional translucency and aesthetic properties, making it ideal for anterior (front) teeth where a natural appearance is paramount.

The process

Crown and bridge treatment at ndu Clinic follows a careful, personalised process. We prepare the tooth conservatively (preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible), take detailed digital impressions, and work with a specialist dental laboratory to create your restoration. The result is a crown or bridge that fits precisely, functions naturally, and blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are metal-free crowns made from?

Our crowns are made from high-quality dental ceramics, primarily zirconia and lithium disilicate (e.max). These materials are strong, durable, and highly biocompatible, with an appearance that closely matches natural teeth.

Why avoid metal in crowns and bridges?

Metal-based crowns (including porcelain-fused-to-metal) contain alloys that can corrode over time, potentially releasing metal ions into surrounding tissue. Some patients experience galvanic currents between different metals in the mouth. Ceramic restorations eliminate these concerns entirely.

How long do ceramic crowns last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, ceramic crowns typically last many years. Zirconia in particular is extremely durable. We design each restoration to withstand normal biting forces while maintaining a natural appearance.

Can you replace my existing metal crowns?

Yes. We can safely remove existing metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and replace them with fully ceramic alternatives. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis during your consultation.
